Medical Physics in Radiation Oncology – an interdisciplinary field of research
In radiation oncology physicians, physicists, RTTs, and radiation biologists works together interdisciplinary to ensure highest standards of care. In addition, they strive to improve continuously treatment quality by developing and introducing new treatment options. In this process, medical physicists are responsible for treatment planning and quality assurance, for the selection and optimization of treatment devices, and last but not least for research questions in that domain. Since modern treatments are image guided and based on several treatment techniques such as photons, brachytherapy or protons, the working and research environment covers a broad spectrum of therapeutic and diagnostic devices.
After a brief introduction to the field, the talk focuses on the one hand on treatment of tumors moving with respiration such as lung or liver lesions. Respiration causes smearing of the dose distribution and potentially under-dosage of the target volume unless dedicated treatment planning and delivery techniques address organ motion. Required are 4D imaging, motion compensated irradiations and/or ideally reconstruction of the dynamically forming dose distribution. Changes in anatomy are also the subject of the second focus of the talk. It addresses interstitial brachytherapy of the female breast which is based on Ir-192 based irradiation of the tumor bed via implanted catheters. In that context anatomical changes occur gradually within the 5-day treatment duration. They can be measured with an electromagnetic tracking system. In the future, those data can be used to adapt the treatment plan to the daily anatomic changes. In addition, the tracking system can detect treatment errors.
